Tiverton Police Logs: Mother Allegedly Assaults Daughter, Resists Arrest

charged a local mother with assault and resisting arrest last week after her 19-year-old daughter alleged she attempted to hit her in the head while driving and also throw her down a flight of stairs in their home.

Stacey Negley, 42, of 70 Briggs Lane, Tiverton, was arrested at 4:30 p.m., Monday, Nov. 28 on Bridle Way. Negley was charged with domestic simple assault and battery, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.

According to Lt. Patrick Jones, police received a call about the female crying in the middle of Bridle Way. Jones said police met with the girl, 19, who claimed she had got into an argument with her mother, later identified as Negley. Jones said the argument started in the car with her mother on the way to the bank in Fall River, and the girl alleged Negley attempted to hit her in the back of the head while they were driving back to Tiverton.

"She stated she attempted to get out of the vehicle, and the mother grabbed her by the hood of her sweatshirt back into the vehicle and continued arguing all the way back home," Jones said.

Back home, the daughter was packing her belongings to leave the residence, when Negley allegedly got in her face, Jones said. The fight reportedly escalated where Negley allegedly threw the daughter into a "box" that was separating the two, and also allegedly tried to push her daughter down a flight of stairs.

Jones said officers went to the home and spoke with the mother, who was allegedly "belligerant" with police when they asked her to step outside and explain what happeend. When officers tried to place Negley under arrest, she reportedly pulled away.

Alleged telephone threats

Julie King, 19, of 99 Providence St., West Warwick, was arrested at 8:39 a.m., Wednesday, Nov. 30. King was charged with domestic crank phone calls.

Jones said police took a walk in complaint from a woman, identified as King's neice, saying King was making threatening calls to her. Jones said the woman stated she received a text message threat on her cell phone from King.

"The woman said Julie threatened to go after her on the telephone and left a message," Jones said.

Based on the alleged threats of violence, an affidavit was filled out against King, and she turned himself in on Nov. 30.

Bench warrant

Dennis Couto, 20, of 130 Brayton Road, Tiverton, was arrested at 12:10 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 1. Coutu was taken into custody based on an outstanding bench warrant issued from Second District Court in Newport. Jones said Couto turned himself in on a warrant for failure to appear in court.
