Tiverton Police Nab Speeder At 135 MPH

Tiverton Police arrested a 28-year-old local man who was driving 80 miles over the speed limit on Route 24 North on Friday night.

Tiverton Police clocked one of the highest-ever recorded speeds in town at 135 mph on Route 24 North at 11:26 p.m. on Friday night, police said.

Raul Barbosa, 28, of 252 Bridle Way, Tiverton, was driving through construction zones near the new Sakonnet River Bridge when an officer on traffic patrol saw his BMW race by at 80 miles over the highway's 55 mph limit.

According to Patrick Jones, public information officer, Srgt. Timothy Panell clocked the car on radar traveling at 135 mph and saw the BMW make several lane changes without using a signal as it raced passed eight cars near the Sakonnet River Bridge.

Pinell successfully stopped Barbosa just before the Massachusetts state line and charged him with reckless driving and numerous moving violations. A computer check also showed Barbosa's license was already suspended.
