Tiverton Police Log: Youths Charged in Connection To Store Robbery

The following arrests were supplied by the Tiverton Police Department. They do not indicate a conviction.

Three youths are receiving summonses from the in connection with the of at 23 Stafford Road.

A 17-year-old Fall River boy and 15-year-old and 14-year-old Tiverton boys are being charged with compounding a felony, which is a felony, and receiving stolen goods, according to Lt. Patrick Jones.

He said the youths were in the nearby apartment at 19 Stafford Road when the suspect, Daniel Lee, of Alston, MA, arrived after allegedly robbing the convenience store.

"It's alleged these boys were complicit in hiding the proceeds from the robbery," Jones said. "So based on that allegation, all three boys were summoned to appear in Family Court on those respective charges."

Barbara J. Botelho, 40, of 36 Last St., Tiverton, was arrested at 9:04 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 27. She was charged with two counts of simple assault and battery, one count of domestic simple assault and battery, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.

Jones said police were called to the house that night at the request of Botelho's parents because she was allegedly intoxicated. Upon arrival, police saw a woman, later identified as Botelho, threatening to kill her sister.

"While in the presence of officers, she was verbally abusive and threatening members of her family," Jones said. "Officers attempted to take her into custody, when she began to yell and scream and spit on the officers.

Truck smashes pole, leaves scene

Gary R. Sharp, 44, of 56 Amory Petty Way, Westport, MA, was arrested at 12:56 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 27. He was charged with failure to stop during an accident and operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license.

Jones said police received a report earlier that morning of a motor vehicle accident in the area of Stafford and Old Stafford roads, where a dark-colored  truck, driven by a white male, struck a utility pole and left the scene heading south on Stafford. He said officers caught up to the vehicle, which sustained severe front end damage, in the area of Robert Street on the Tiverton/Westport line. Jones said the accident required the road to be closed down for a number of hours so the pole could be replaced. He said based on the investigation and testimony from and independent witness of the accident, the driver, Sharp, received those charges.

Back at the station, girlfriend changes statement then flips out

Michelle Cesario, 42, of 18 Holly Lane, Westport, MA, was arrested at 2:09 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 27, at the police station. She was charged with disorderly conduct and obstructing a police officer.

Jones said Cesario is the girlfriend of Gary Sharp, of Westport, who turned himself in that day after allegedly hitting a utility pole on Stafford Road and leaving the scene. She accompanied him to the police station, and told officers she was operating the vehicle.

"She initially provided a written statement identifying her boyfriend as the operator," Jones said. "Then claimed she wanted to change her statement and claim she was the operator."

Jones said Cesario attempted to change her statement when police officers were interviewing Sharp in a secured room in the station. Cesario was told to wait in the lobby, but at some point, tried to get through the secure door where her boyfriend was and began to yell and scream.

Alleged drunk driver found with four open beers

George Matta, Jr., 60, of 446 Main Road, Tiverton, was arresed at 5:16 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 25, on Shove Street. Matta was charged with operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of drugs or alcohol (first offense), presence of alcoholic beverages while operating a motor vehicle, littering and a license plate violation.

Jones said Matta was stopped after officers saw him throw a lit cigarette out of his driver's side window while driving up Canonicus Street. Officers followed the vehicle, and in front of the post on Shove Street, stopped the car. Police determined the driver, Matta, was under the influence and took a field sobirety test, which he failed and could not complete, Jones said. Back at the station, Matta took a breathalyzer test, which registered at 0.15.

Jones noted that when the vehicle was towed from the scene. Police found four open Coors Light bottles.

Man causes stir in Dunkin' Donuts

David R. Beard, 26, of 4 Wendy St., Apt. 5, Westport, MA, was arrested by Tiverton Police at 8:35 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 25 at the on Stafford Road. He was charged with disorderly conduct.

Jones said police were called to the shop for a report of a customer disturbance. Prior to police arriving, it was reported the suspect, later identified as Beard, left in a vehicle, which was stopped by another officer en route to the call. Jones said police were unsure if Beard was familiar with the staff, but when he came into the store, he allegedly began to yell, scream and swear in front of the patrons.

"It was so bad the girls went into the back and called 911, because they got nervous," Jones said.
