Tiverton Receives Harbor Patrol Boat From State

Tiverton's habormaster repaired and converted a relatively new patrol boat into full service in September. It's docked at with a "Tiverton Harbor Patrol" logo painting on the hull.

It is the second donated boat to the fleet this year.

Harbormaster David Vannier said the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management donated a 26-foot 1997 Mako Patrol boat to the town in June to replace the "tired" 24-foot 1986 Romarine. Vannier said the Mako has two 2003 Yamaha 225-horsepower four-stroke engines and added they have less than 550 hours of combined use. The Romarine has a single 200-horsepower Yamaha engine with 1,600 hours of use.

Vannier said he made minor repairs to Marine 2, the new boat, such as fixing a trim/tilt piston leak and worn out trim tab. He removed the Romarine, Marine 1, from service in September.

With the DEM requiring every coastal town with an excess of 300 moorings, like Tiverton, to have a pumpout vessel for boat septic tanks, Vannier said he hopes to convert Marine 1 for that use.

"This coincides with Rhode Island being a no discharge state," he said in an email.

The town last spring in memory of Gerald "Gerry" Leduc, a 25-year veteran of the The Gerald Leduc Foundation made the donation.
