Tiverton Woman Dies After Being Run Over By Own Vehicle

The accident occurred on Tuesday in the parking lot of Bank Newport, 614 Main Road.

The woman who on Tuesday at Bank Newport died later that day in the hospital from her injuries, according to . She was suffering from a medical condition.

Police responded to 614 Main Road at 8:54 a.m. that morning for a report of a woman, Leona Sorensen, 64, of 851 Main Road, Tiverton, involved in an accident in the parking lot of and the . 

Lt. Patrick Jones said that upon arrival officers found Sorensen run over by her own vehicle, a 2008 Toyota SUV, and her injuries appeared life threatening. She was transported by rescue to St. Anne's Hospital in Fall River and later transported to Rhode Island Hospital where she died of her injuries later that day.

Jones said that according to witnesses on scene, it appeared Sorensen was suffering some sort of medical emergency as she attempted to exit her vehicle.

"Witnesses described her as being limp as she fell from her vehicle, onto the ground, holding the steering wheel," Jones said. He said that given Sorensen was holding onto the steering wheel, it contributed her vehicle turning and, unfortunately, running her over once she struck the ground.
