Two Weekend Accidents in Tiverton End in DUI Charges

The following arrests were supplied by the Tiverton Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction

charged two people with drunk driving over the weekend after their vehicles were involved in two separate accidents.

Nelson Cabral, 21, of 67 Sidney St., Fall River, MA, was arrested at 8:18 a.m., Saturday, April 21. He was charged with operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of drugs or alcohol (first offense).

Officers responded to a vehicle off the road at 4:38 a.m., according to Lt. Patrick Jones. Upon arrival to the area of Main and Indian Point roads, officers saw a car, a 2005 Mitsubishi Gallant, sitting in a ditch on the western side of the roadway appearing to have crossed over the southbound lane of travel. Its front end had moderate damage with dents and scrapes along the passenger side doors.

Jones said they saw a man, Cabral, sitting in the driver's seat claiming he was unhurt. Officers made indications of alcohol intoxication. Due to injuries sustained from the crash, Jones said it was necessary to call in a rescue to take Cabral to . He reportedly agreed to a blood test at the hospital, and it was sent to a toxicology lab.

Samantha Romano, 21, of 86 Lepes Road, Tiverton, was arrested at 11:24 p.m., Sunday, April 22. She was charged with operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of drugs or alcohol (first offense, BAC of .15 or greater), refusal to submit a chemical test, speeding and failure to maintain control of her motor vehicle.

Jones said officers responded to the intersection of Main and Canonicus streets for a report of an accident. Upon arrival, officers saw the vehicle's front passenger tire missing and passenger side fender resting in the roadway. Jones said police spoke with the driver, Romano, who claimed to have lost control of her vehicle. Officers reportedly detected an odor of alcohol. She was given a field sobriety test, which she failed. Back at the station, she refused a chemical test.

Jones noted that officers on scene did give Romano a breathalyzer test, which reportedly registered .158.

Teens caught with booze in car

A 17-year-old male, from Tiverton, was arrested at 11:37 p.m., Monday, April 16. He was charged with possession and consumption of alcohol by a minor. Jones said an officer pulled over a car with four juveniles on Crandall Road for a speeding violation. Alcoholic beverages were reportedly visible in the vehicle.

Bench warrant

Krystal LaPlante, 21, of 206 Buffington St., second floor, Fall River, MA, was arrested at 11:34 p.m., Tuesday, April 17. She was taken into custody based on an outstanding bench warrant issued in Third District Court.
