Drunken Driver Lost 2 Tires Fleeing Police, Caught After Crashing Into Cruisers: Cops

The Central Falls man made a run for it after but was nabbed after jumping a fence, police said.

WARWICK, RI — A drunken driver lost two tires fleeing from the police and then crashed into cruisers before running off and jumping a fence, police said.

Roberto Lopez, 45, was still apprehended despite his desperate bid to elude the law, police said.

An officer attempted to pull Lopez over shortly after 2 p.m. Thursday but the Central Falls man took off, making his way from Post Road to northbound Interstate 95, the Warwick Police Department said in a media release.

"During the pursuit, the vehicle lost two tires and subsequently lost control, colliding with two marked Warwick Police Department cruisers, the release said.

"Lopez then fled the vehicle on foot, jumping a fence onto Wellington Avenue in Cranston, where he was taken into custody," the release said. "There were no injuries reported."

Lopez was charged with driving under the influence, eluding law enforcement, failing to stop for an accident resulting in damage to an attended vehicle, driving without a license and obstructing an officer in the execution of duty, according to the release.

"He is also wanted on an extraditable warrant out of Maine for carrying a prohibited weapon," the release said.
