Today's riddle: What day of the year is trucker's day? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. With 'Nocturna,' WHS band brings theatrical drama to halftime (thewesterlysun.com) — Westerly High School's marching band is unveiling "Nocturna," a custom-designed, story-driven halftime show created around this year's senior leaders and supported by the Westerly High School Music Boosters. Students have been rehearsing since summer band camp and will perform the four-movement production at home football games, competitions, parades, and a special gym concert, aiming to impress regional judges and engage the local community.
2. Westerly Liquor License Exemptions Face Legal Question (upriseri.com) — Westerly's town solicitor has warned the Licensing Board that a couple of local liquor licenses rely on legislative exemptions similar to one the Rhode Island Supreme Court just struck down in a Providence case. While he says those licenses are currently lawful, he cautions that a future court challenge by nearby churches, schools, or neighbors could put them at risk, and expects the General Assembly may revisit the issue.
3. Westerly OKs 3 A.m. Hours for Granite Street Taco Bell (upriseri.com) — If you live near Granite Street, expect late-night traffic soon: the Westerly Licensing Board has approved daily hours until 3 a.m. for the new Taco Bell, with opening no earlier than 6 a.m. Board members questioned security and camera coverage before unanimously backing the extended-hours license, and the restaurant is now just waiting on electrical service before opening.
4. Westerly Schools Send $2.2M Roof, Playground Request to Town (upriseri.com) — Westerly families could see major school upgrades as the School Committee advances a $2.2 million middle school roof project, new playground surfacing and windows at Dunn's Corners, and safety, camera, and tech improvements in its FY2028 capital request. Members also want $710,294 in leftover capital funds shifted to reduce new borrowing, while continuing work on policies, wellness, and traffic around State Street School.
5. Westerly Man Sentenced to 8+ Years for Fatal DUI Crash (news-usa.today) — A Westerly resident has been sentenced to more than eight years in prison for a drunk-driving crash that killed pedestrian Michael DePaola on Oak Street in February 2023. Local police, state investigators, and the attorney general detailed how his blood alcohol level exceeded the legal limit, and the court also imposed a long probation term, license suspension, treatment requirements, and a fine.
