📰 News we're reading

• Westerly man to serve more than 8 years in state prison for DUI crash that killed a 31-year-old pedestrian (einpresswire.com) — A Westerly man has been sentenced to 8.5 years in state prison for a 2023 drunk-driving crash on Oak Street that killed 31-year-old Westerly resident Michael DePaola. Police found DePaola fatally injured on the sidewalk, and later tests showed the driver's blood alcohol level above the legal limit. Local police and the Attorney General say they hope the stiff sentence reinforces the consequences of impaired driving in Westerly.

• Royce Family Fund (insidephilanthropy.com) — Westerly organizations feature prominently in the Royce Family Fund's arts and community giving, with repeated support for Ocean Community United Theatre, the Knickerbocker Music Center, the Artists' Cooperative of Westerly, and the Westerly Land Trust. The fund even owns the Westerly Education Center, underscoring the town as a key hub in its national philanthropy, though it does not accept unsolicited proposals.

• Weekly High School Schedule: Tuesday Oct. 13 to Saturday, Oct. 17 (thewesterlysun.com) — Westerly student-athletes have a busy week ahead, with girls and boys soccer, volleyball, and football all in action from Tuesday through Saturday. Fans can catch home volleyball Wednesday against LaSalle and boys soccer Friday night versus Coventry, while football travels to Woonsocket and girls soccer heads to Pilgrim and Scituate. It's a full slate for anyone wanting to support local Bulldogs teams.
