Happy Wednesday, neighbors, and happy National Pizza Day! Here's everything you need to know about what's happening locally today.

Our District 24 Representative has something to say about potholes. Also, WACTC is in the news. Finally, what is the school committee talking about?

First, today's weather:

Sunny to partly cloudy. High: 43 Low: 31.

Here are the top five stories today in Woonsocket:

  1. Melissa Murray, the former Woonsocket City Council member and current representative for District 24, tweeted Tuesday that Route 146 "going in & out of Woonsocket/N Smithfield is a minefield of large deep potholes." Likening it to "playing Mario Cart with an actual risk of crashing," she calls it a dangerous situation. It "needs to be fixed ASAP!" (@MelissaMurrayRI)
  2. The Regional Woonsocket Area Career & Technical Center's Health Careers Program made the 2022 RI CTE Spotlights on Tuesday. Kudos to Mrs. Bacon! The "program has produced a 92% graduation rate." " Partnerships with the Rhode Island Department of Health, Landmark Hospital, Woonsocket nursing homes, and PrepareRI" enabled the program to "accumulate over 3,000 work-based learning hours this school year." (2022 CTE Spotlights, @RIDeptEd)
  3. The Woonsocket School Committee Meeting is today in-person and online. New business includes the "Superintendent's recommendation not to renew certain probationary teachers." Another discussion item is the "approval of the amendments to the District's Bullying Policy." (On Worldwide)
  4. Will the Slaterville post office at 42 Main St. be renamed as the Specialist Matthew R. Turcotte Post Office? This motion was voted into law Tuesday evening. It honors the 20-year-old who died in 2017 at Fort Carson during a "live-ammunition training accident." Senator Sheldon Whitehouse called Spc. Turcotte, "a patriot and a proud son of North Smithfield who we tragically lost long before his time." (ABC)
  5. North Smithfield has a new police officer in training. It is 14 weeks old and goes by the name of K-9 Liberty. The PD said Tuesday that the Australian Labradoodle puppy "is a compassion dog, with a goal to enhance community relations." She is currently "learning how to work with special victims, deal with people who have special needs, as well as how to help someone who has witnessed a crime." (WJAR)
