Girls Volleyball: Mounties Fly Past Falcons

Mount Saint Charles defeats Cranston West 3-0.

Mount Saint Charles proved they are a force to be reckoned with in Division I girls volleyball on Monday night when they dismantled Cranston West on the road. They won the contest 3-0.

The first game was pure dominance by the Mounties. They had three scoring streaks in the game, totaling 23-2. They got all but two of the necessary 25 points to win a game, in their 8-0, 8-1, and 7-1 runs throughout the game.

After trailing 3-1, Mount notched eight consecutive points and never looked back. After the Falcons scored, cutting the lead to 9-4, they reeled off a 8-1 run, upping the lead to 17-5. A 7-1 run finished the game, as they won it 25-7.

The Falcons regrouped and the second game was much more competitive. The biggest lead for either team was only three points throughout the second game.

The teams traded the lead several times and late in the game it was tied at 19, 21, and 23. A kill by Mounties junior Meaghan Walsh ended the game, giving Mount a 25-23 victory.

It was a crucial point in the match because a win by the Falcons in the second game would have given them the momentum. The Mounties made more errors in the second game, but came through late to secure the victory.

"We didn’t play inspired in the beginning of the second game but we stepped up late in the game," Mounties coach, Josh D'Abate, said.

Tom Ferri, West's coach, added, "I told them if you can play that well one game, you can do it all the time."

Mount Saint Charles charged out to a 6-1 and 14-3 lead in the third game, all but ending the contest. They went on to win the final game 25-15, taking the match 3-0.

Mounties junior Carissa Gould had 22 assists and 4 digs, Walsh had 8 kills and 8 digs, and the star of the match was senior Kelsey Lace. Lace finished with 11 kills and 4 aces.

D'Abate spoke about Lace's performance and what she means to the team. "She is a solid all around player and gives us a lot of options," he said, "Everyone keys on her defensively so our other girls take advantage of that by coming up with big points."

Ferri added, "Lace is a premier hitter and one of the best hitters in the state."

Carlotta Trapassi and Courtney Salisbury led the Falcons with 15 digs.
