Joe Louis Walker at Chan's Tonight
A contemporary blues artist with a unique style and distinctive sound.
Tonight, Joe Louis Walker will bring his unique and distinctive sound to Chan's. In the 1960's the San Francisco Filmore District was known around the world as the birthplace for psychedelic rock. It was also the place for modern electric blues and where one of the genre's top musical trailblazers, Joe Louis Walker, was born and raised. His parents were originally from the South and gave Walker his first exposure to the blues which was pure and real. His Mom played B.B. King records and his Dad was a blues piano player.
Walker is an award winning guitar slinger who blends blues, rock, gospel, jazz and country effortlessly with a deep soulful voice. His first job at the age of 16 was as house guitarst at San Francisco's famed musical playground, The Matrix, where he opened shows for everyone from Lightnin' Hopkins (who once threw him off the stage for adding improvised lyrics to the song he was singing) to Jimi Hendrix to Thelonious Monk. In addition to his work at the Matrix, he was a regular at Bill Graham's famed Filmore East.
In 1986 Walker was signed to his first recording contract with Hightone Records and his debut CD, "Cold is the Night" caught the attention of music fans around the country. Billboard Magazine called it, "A contemporary blues find".
