Supplemental TaxΒ - The Woonsocket Budget Commission willΒ discuss how to assess tax bills to increase the city's 2012 tax levy by 4.5 percentΒ Tuesday. The increase is one element of the Commission's plan to fix the city's $14.5 million deficit over the next five years. They'll meet at City Hall in Harris Hall at 3 p.m.

Presidents' Day: The holiday is officiallyΒ known as Washington's Birthday, according to timeanddate.com. The birthday of George Washington, the first president of the US, was first celebrated as a holiday in the District of Columbia in 1880. It was made a federal holiday in 1885.

City Hall is open, and there's a City Council meeting tonight in Harris Hall, 7 p.m. Among the things they'll consider is a tax exemption for senior residents.Β 

Free Tax ServicesΒ Connecting for Children & Families (CCF) is reopening its Volunteer IncomeΒ TaxΒ Assistance (VITA) site in Woonsocket.Β  The VITA program provides freeΒ taxΒ preparationΒ for families with income less than $50,000.Β  TheΒ taxΒ preparers are trained and certified by IRS to do federal and stateΒ taxreturns.Β  This freeΒ service isΒ available Mondays – Fridays 9:30 AM to 2:30 p.m. and Thursday 5 to 8 p.m. at the Hope Street Family Center at 46 Hope Street, Woonsocket.
