Here are the top stories in Woonsocket today:
- Gov. Daniel McKee announced an additional 130 emergency shelter beds and a quarantine facility for people dealing with homelessness. Last month 220 shelter beds were added with the $5 million in funding from the state. The new beds are being added at shelters in four cities and the Community Care Alliance in Woonsocket is one of them. It will have an additional 10 hotel vouchers. (U.S. News & World Report)
- A 16-year-old Woonsocket High School student is set to appear in family court after Woonsocket police were made aware of a social media threat of a possible shooting at the high school. The juvenile has been suspended from school and charged. Detectives found no credibility to the posting and no weapons were located at the student's home. A wave of social media shooting threats in recent weeks includes Barrington High School. (WPRI.com)
- The Woonsocket Police Department has seen a recent uptick in the number of catalytic converters stolen from vehicles. Thieves target catalytic converters for their precious metals, which can be more valuable than gold. Catalytic converters are attached to the exhaust system in cars and are typically made with metals from the platinum group, including platinum, palladium, and rhodium. The safest thing to do is park your car in your garage. (Valley Breeze)
- On Nov. 15, local advocates called on city officials to spend ARPA funds to address homelessness in the city, criticizing other proposed spending items such as road paving and a synthetic ice skating rink. Two city councilors have proposed committing more than $100,000 toward motel vouchers and a local soup kitchen. Woonsocket Motor Inn on Clinton Street has agreed to allocate 10 rooms per night from Jan. 1 until March 31, with the city paying the bill using ARPA funds. Social service providers have in recent months offered repeated warnings to lawmakers about the severity of the state's homelessness crisis.(Valley Breeze)
- More than half the cell block toilets at the Woonsocket Police Department are out of order, a problem the department is currently looking at a six-figure bill to resolve, according to Police Chief Thomas Oates. Oates told members of the City Council that six out of the 11 toilets in the station's adult detention area are not working due to water leakage. The toilets in the cell blocks were installed 45 years ago when the building was constructed and are all failing. Part of the problem, he said, is that the cell blocks were installed with a 24-inch crawl space that does not offer easy access to an individual toilet's plumbing. Along with replacing all 11 toilets, the department is looking to install fiberglass plumbing and make future repairs easier. The project is also expected to equip the cells with hot running water, a feature Oates said is already mandatory in Massachusetts. (City Council Meeting)
