Mount St. Charles Boys Defeat Moses Brown, 6-0
The Mounties asserted themselves as one of the state's top teams Friday, overwhelming the Quakers in Woonsocket.
Mount St. Charles Academy notched three power-play goals, scored two more while short-handed and struck once at even-strength to down the Moses Brown Quakers, 6-0, at Adelard Arena.
The Mounties led, 3-0, after two periods Friday, and potted a trio of third-period goals to secure their second consecutive league victory. When Mount St. Charles and Moses Brown first met, Jan. 8 at Thayer Ice Arena, the Mounties netted three third-period goals, including senior Michael Magerman’s power-play goal at 14:52, to produce a 6-6 draw.
No such rally was needed Feb. 11, however; senior forward Trevor Plante scored the Mounties' game-winning goal at 9:20 in the first period.

With Mount St. Charles’ Benjamin Handanyan in the penalty box, Plante established possession of the puck in the offensive zone, then fired a shot from the left wing that slipped through the pads of Moses Brown’s junior goalie, Charles Simmons, and crept over the goal line.
“Against these teams, you’ve got to play three periods,” said David Belisle, head coach of the Mounties. “You can’t play in spurts. You’ve got to come to play, and we came to play.”

The Mounties doubled the lead at 6:03 of the second, when senior forward Derek Deschene scored with assists from his line-mates and fellow seniors, Alexander Erban and Brian Campbell.
Nathan Farrington attempted to halve Moses Browns’ deficit with the man-advantage approximately four minutes later, but his bid was thwarted by Mount St. Charles’ senior goalie, Daniel Foster, who made 18 saves to preserve the Mounties’ second consecutive intra-divisional shut-out.
Simmons stopped 24 shots, as well, but he struggled to deny the tandem of Magerman and senior Zachary Samborsky, who combined for a pair of power-play goals 1:47 apart.
At 13:49 of the second period, Magerman re-directed Samborsky’s shot from the right half-boards over Simmons’ shoulder and under the cross-bar for the Mounties’ third goal.
Mount St. Charles tacked on another 39 seconds into the third period, when Samborsky beat Simmons with help from Magerman.
Freshman defender Dominic Rovero expanded the Mounties’ margin to five with the man-advantage at 3:54, scoring his first-intra-divisional goal, and Samborsky chipped in another at 9:22, while Mount St. Charles successfully killed the Quakers’ fifth and final power play.
“We were ready for this hockey game tonight. You could tell by the effort that was put out there,” Belisle said.
With the win, the Mounties improve their league record to 13-1-1-0. They’ve accrued 27 points thus far, most in the state and six more than the second-place Quakers and Hawks of Bishop Hendricken High School.
Mount St. Charles will continue to work toward a divisional championship Feb. 12, when they encounter the Burrillville Broncos at Levy Rink.
“We’ve got a big game again tomorrow night against Burrillville,” Belisle said. “We’ve got to come right back and continue playing this type of hockey.”
