RI Police Officer Stabbed During Altercation With Suspect

CUMBERLAND, NH — Police and state officials are investigating an officer involved shooting after a Cumberland police officer was stabbed Saturday near the town's high school.

According to WPRI.com, around 7 p.m., an officer was sent to the athletic field on Mendon Road near the high school to investigate a call. When the officer arrived, an altercation ensued, a suspect stabbed the officer, and then the officer fired his handgun at the suspect.

The town's mayor, Jeff Mutter, told media outlets that both the officer and the suspect were taken to the hospital and that the incident was still under investigation.

Officers from Lincoln as well as the Rhode Island State Police were called to assist and the attorney general's office is also involved in the investigation. No other information was available at post time.
