High School Sports Roundup

Woonsocket Girls Basketball and MSC are in the middle of the pack in their respective divisions, but need to secure some wins against quality opponents.

Nearing the halfway mark of the season, Woonsocket Girls Basketball is 4-4 and sits in sixth place in Division I North. Three of the Villa Novans losses have come against the top three teams of the division, in Bayview, Barrington, and East Providence. Woonsocket has done a good job against lesser teams in the division, but will need to secure some victories against some quality opponents to move up in the standings. The Villa Novans have a stretch of winnable games upcoming, in which they will face two teams below them in the standings and a Smithfield squad they have already beaten this year, presenting an opportunity to move toward the top of the league.

MSC Boys Basketball has had a rough start to their season, but picked up their first victory on Thursday evening against Fatima in blowout fashion, 76-51. The Mounties are now 1-6 in Division III North and will need to string some victories together to get back into playoff contention. Their next game will be a challenge, when they host a 6-1 Tollgate team.

It's been a rough season for the winless Woonsocket Boys Hockey team. The young Villa Novan squad has been outscored 75-6 in their 0-8 campaign. The Villa Novans had their best game of the season last Saturday against Warwick Vets, losing 6-5. But the Villa Novans were blown out again last night against undefeated Johnston/North Providence. With 8 games remaining, Woonsocket will start their second half on Saturday against West Warwick, with hopes of notching their first victory.

MSC Boys Hockey fell to the Hendricken Hawks last night and are now 3-3-1 on the season. The Mounties lost to Hendricken earlier in the season and their only other loss was in overtime against LaSalle. The Mounties have outscored their opponents 18-8 in all other contests, but will need to step up their efforts against the division's leading private schools as they still have four games left against the two schools. MSC will be back on the ice tomorrow night against Cranston West.
