Tuesday Five: Snow, Commission, Council, Help Out, Diner

It's the start of another short holiday week - check out today's things to know about it.

Snow - So, it's been snowing for a little while, and there are some cancelations and delays:

  • Woonsocket Public Schools, Delayed 1 hour, no morning kindergarten.
  • Beacon Charter High School delayed 1 hour.
  • Woonsocket Head Start and Day Care: Childcare open at 8:00//Head start open regular time
  • Mount St. Charles Closed

Commission - The Woonsocket Budget Commission meets today at 3:30 p.m. in Harris Hall at City Hall. They'll review the 5-year plan for getting the city back to financial health, and hear the report of Police Chief Thomas Carey on Spindle City Pawnbrokers' time in Danvers, MA.

Council - The City Council meets tonight, 7 p.m. in Harris Hall at City Hall, 169 Main St. Among the things on their agenda, they'll discuss and vote on an ordinance allowing supermarkets in C-1 Urban Commercial Zones. They will also consider an ordinance setting a limit of two on available pawn broker licenses in the city.

Help outΒ - A bunch of folks are out of a home followingΒ yesterday's fire at 170 Lincoln St.Β Residents have set upΒ collections for the families displacedΒ by the fire on Facebook. The Renaud Family is in needΒ clothing for their 2 young daughters ages 1 and 4. Sizes needed are 5T and 2T. They're in need of every-day items, too.Β

Donations can be dropped off at The Primitive Millhouse 1452 Broncos Hwy Unit #15 Harrisville RI (Dunkin Donuts PLaza) andΒ 166 Carrington Avenue in Woonsocket.Β 

For the Castro family, items are needed for two boys,Β ages 9 and 7 and size 7 and 8-10. AΒ fund has been set up for them, or you can e-mailΒ dbracamonte2@gmail.com.

Diner for leaseΒ - Been itching to start up a new restaurant? NeighborworksΒ Blackstone River Valley isΒ offering experienced restauranteurs a lease of the diner car once home to β€œChamps Diner,” on Park Avenue, now waiting a new tenant and customers at 719 Front St. The carΒ was one of more than 600 diners produced by the Worcester Lunch Car and Carriage Manufacturing Company.Β 

Applications to win the lease, including a resume and business plan, are due Feb. 13.
