WHS Girls, Mount Boys Highlight Winter Season

The high school girls basketball team and the Mounties hockey team both fell just short of the state title.

Woonsocket Girls Basketball
won their final two games of the season, securing a 13-6 record and a second seed in the Division I State Tournament. The Villa Novans pulled out a 47-44 victory over Chariho in the opening round, but were upset by the third seed, Westerly, in the quarterfinals. The Villa Novans will lose four seniors, including their top two scorers in Michelle Brayboy and Kaley Fugere. Fugere also graduates as only the fifth player to score a thousand points for Woonsocket.

MSC Girls Basketball had a tough season, finishing with a 5-13 record in Division II. Although the Mounties were able to finish on a high note, winning two of their last four games.

Woonsocket Boys Basketball finished with a disappointing 1-17 record. The Villa Novans will lose five seniors and will look for the underclassmen to improve for next season.

MSC Boys Hockey scuffled a bit out of the gate this season, but played great hockey down the stretch, finishing their regular season at 13-5, while gaining the second seed in the State Championship tournament. The Mounties faced their Cimini Division rivals LaSalle in the opening round. MSC dropped game one, but rallied to win game two and forced a decisive third game. The Mounties were able to advance in an emotional, well-earned, double-overtime victory over the Rams.

MSC faced Bishop Hendricken in the State Finals for the second consecutive year at Providence College. The Mounties dropped game one, 4-3, but forced game three with a 3-2 victory in game two. The magical run would end there with a 5-2 loss to Hendricken, as the Mounties simply ran out of gas.

"It was an incredible year of excitement. We won our tournament. We played at Fenway Park. We were down to LaSalle and ready to get knocked out, but we scored in the final minute and won in double overtime in our own building. And we battled this great team [Hendricken] tooth and nail, and we just ran out of gas. But it was an incredible year," MSC Coach David Belisle said.
