Today's riddle: What do you call a one-legged Big Foot? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. Chapel of Ease Ghost Legend on St. Helena Island (locallifesc.com) — Just across the water from Beaufort, the Chapel of Ease ruins on St. Helena Island are said to host the ghosts of Eliza and Edgar, lovers separated when he died riding back from Beaufort. Locals and visitors still report eerie music, shadowy figures, and moonlit walks through the old cemetery, keeping this Lowcountry legend very much alive.
2. Dr. Buzzard and the Legend of Lowcountry Rootwork (locallifesc.com) — Beaufort County readers get a rich look at the legend of Dr. Buzzard, the St. Helena Island root doctor whose reputation once filled local courtrooms and fascinated the sheriff himself. The story traces Lowcountry rootwork traditions, their Gullah-Geechee roots, and how belief in curses and cures still occasionally surfaces around Beaufort generations later.
3. 5 Lowcountry Places Where History and Legend Meet (locallifesc.com) — Beaufort's own Castle, Citizens Cemetery, and Verdier House anchor a tour of eerie Lowcountry history, from ghostly legends to Gullah traditions. The story highlights how familiar Beaufort streets, homes, and graveyards hide centuries of folklore, spiritual practices, and unresolved historical mysteries that residents can still see and visit today.
4. 09.28.26 Water, water, everywhere.... (blogspot.com) — A visiting angler describes chasing a huge king tide around Beaufort, finding favorite flats completely underwater and seeing no redfish activity despite ideal visibility. Along the way he notes flooded roads near town, a Beaufort resident buying a pricey new truck, and his own search for bargain building materials before heading back to New Jersey.
5. Illinois man faces attempted murder charge after Bluffton hotel shooting (islandpacket.com) — Beaufort County deputies arrested a 19-year-old Illinois man after a Sunday night shooting at Bluffton's Holiday Inn left another man with non-life-threatening injuries. The suspect was quickly located nearby, charged with attempted murder, and is now being held at the Beaufort County Detention Center as the investigation continues.
