Here are the top three stories today in Charleston:

  1. A swim instructor saved a drowning 11-year-old girl last Thursday at a West Ashley pool. Melissa Macdonald has been a lifeguard for 8 years but the incident last week was reportedly the most terrifying day on the job. Macdonald performed CPR on the girl and she began breathing after seven rounds. (fox28media.com)
  2. The City of Charleston has begun construction of a new affordable senior living complex at the site of the former Archer School. Mayor Tecklenburg highlighted the ability of the area's residents to age in place at the complex. The construction is expected to finish by early 2024. (Charleston Post Courier)
  3. The Charleston Animal Society is dedicating July to raising awareness of the rising level of animal cruelty incidents in the county.
