College of Charleston graduate students say their findings could guide future fisheries policy and environmental protections, with early results showing strong crab reproduction but microplastics at every sampling site, especially near heavily used areas like the Ravenel Bridge.

Charleston braces for more flooding as Isaias remnants bring high tide, rain (live5news.com) — Charleston officials are warning residents to stay off the roads Saturday night as heavy rain from Hurricane Isaias coincides with an 8 p.m. high tide that could bring significant street flooding. With 21 roads already closed, free parking in city garages, and ticketing for drivers who push wakes into homes, residents are urged to use the TIDEeye app, avoid barricaded areas, and call 911 only for emergencies.

Bodycam Footage Reveals Welfare Check Weeks Before South Carolina Toddlers' Deaths (internewscast.com) — Charleston County residents are learning more about a heartbreaking case in which two toddlers were later found dead from starvation after at least 13 prior welfare checks at their home. Newly released bodycam footage from an August visit shows deputies and a social worker finding a seemingly orderly house and no immediate danger. The sheriff's office is now reviewing its actions, while the children's father has hired an attorney to scrutinize the investigation.
   

4. IAAM to Host Legacy and Lineage Symposium Featuring Descendants of Historic Figures, Celebrity Chef Carla Hall, and Culinary Leaders (holycitysinner.com) — Charleston residents can join the International African American Museum's inaugural Legacy and Lineage Symposium at the Charleston Marriott on Friday, Oct. 16, from 12:30 to 4 p.m. The program features descendants of historic figures, celebrity chef Carla Hall, and cultural leaders exploring African American memory, restitution, and food traditions as part of IAAM Homecoming 2026.
   

5. Buccaneers Bash #21 Bulldogs in Echols' Starting QB Debut (abccolumbia.com) — Charleston Southern football fans have plenty to cheer about after the Buccaneers upset #21 South Carolina State 49–39 in Charleston, powered by three touchdown passes from new starting quarterback Jared Echols and big special teams plays. With multiple forced turnovers and standout defensive performances, CSU now turns its attention to a high-profile road matchup at Clemson next weekend.
