Update: 7 Arrested After Deputy Was Attacked

Deputies arrested seven people Tuesday and Wednesday for interfering with the arrest of a man.

Editor's note: The Richland County Sheriff's Department originally stated that Russell Wheat, 51, was also arrested. Sheriff's department spokesman Curtis Wilson said that Wheat was not arrested. Wheat actually came to the deputy's assistance during the attack. 

Eight people are in jail after a Richland County Sheriff's Deputy was assaulted while trying to make an arrest at a Bluff Road residence. 

A deputy responded to a call about drug activity at a home in the 4500 block of Bluff Road Tuesday, according to the sheriff's department. The deputy tried to arrest 26-year-old Warren Spruill, Jr., who had an outstanding warrant for aggravated assault.

Spruill Jr.'s father, Warren Spruill, Sr., attempted to stab the deputy with a screw driver, according to the sheriff's department. Several other people also interfered with the arrest. 

Spruill Jr. fled during the altercation, according to the sheriff's department.

A citizen's tip later led deputies to 3007 East Way Park where they arrested Spruill Jr. 

Spruill Jr. was wanted for an aggravated assault that happened on Oct. 21 at Goodwin's Store on Bluff Road. Deputies say Spruill Jr. shot another man in the lower body. 

The following people were arrested and charged for Tuesday's incident: 

  • Warren Spruill, Jr., 26 - assault of a police officer, assault of a high and aggravated nature, resisting arrest, loitering narcotics, pedestrian in roadway, and larceny
  • Warren Spruill, Sr., 52 - assault of a police officer, and interference with police while arrest
  • Robert Allen Javis, 23 - assault on a police officer, interference with police while arrest, and loitering narcotics
  • Bryan Threatt, 43 - interference with police while arrest
  • Charles Epps, 27 - public disorderly conduct
  • Ypreshus Tyshayla Gibbs, 26 - interference with police while arrest
  • Alford Goodwin III, 24 - obstruction and criminal domestic violence
