Although, Marcia Stephens no longer managed one of the afterschool programs at Sandel, she found a way to support an out-of-state program that sustained severe damage due to Super Storm Sandy in October, 2012. In November, culminating with the celebration of Good Citizenship, Mrs. Stephens partnered with her sister Dr. Z. Newland, who lives in New York, to assist participants in an afterschool program who were affected by Super Storm Sandy. Fae Young, Margaret Marriott, Joseph Brown, Reginald Sims, students, staff and parents organized and donated over 170 lbs. of school supplies to the Martin Luther King Center in Long Beach, Long Island (NY). Mrs. Stukes, one of Sandel’s PTO Officers, made sure the postage was paid. “Our goal is to continuously empower our students with the feeling that no matter how young you are or how little you may think you have you can give to others,” stated Ms. Stephens. As the center prepared to move into a new program site, due to storm damage, the supply delivery had to be put on hold. Finally, on March 7, 2013, Dr. Newland delivered the much awaited school supplies to the children participating in the MLK Center’s afterschool program. Board Chair James Hodge and the afterschool participants at the MLK Center are most appreciative of the school supplies donated by W.S. Sandel Elementary School. Sandel Eagles truly delivered a knockout punch to Superstorm Sandy!
