Deputy's Son, 4, Accidentally Shoots Himself

Child picked up the weapon while his father was getting ready for work Wednesday.

A Richland County Sheriff Deputy's son accidentally shot himself with his father's personal weapon Wednesday morning, according to reports from multiple news sources.

Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott said the incident happened around 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday. Lott did not identify the deputy or child, and did not give the child's condition.

Lott said the deputy was in the bathroom preparing for his day when he heard a gunshot, and found his son lying on the floor with a gunshot wound to the upper body. The child was rushed to Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital and is expected to survive.
