Update: Disabled Pedestrian Killed by Dump Truck is Identified

An elderly man in wheelchair was struck and killed Monday morning in Five Points.

Update, June 27: An elderly man who was struck and killed by a commercial dump truck while operating his motorized wheelchair Monday in Five Points has been identified.

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts identified the victim as 67-year-old George Jackson of Read Street in Columbia. He was struck in his wheelchair at the intersection of Harden Street and Greene Street just after 10:15 a.m. Monday.

Original story: A man in a motorized wheelchair was struck and killed Monday morning by a dump truck in Five Points.

"The man, whose identity has not been released, was lying in the road, bleeding profusely from head injuries, on the west side of Greene Street several feet from where that street intersects Harden Street," according to this report in The State.

It's the third pedestrian versus vehicle incident since May at that intersection, the paper said.

A witness said the man in the wheelchair appeared to be waiting to cross Harden Street when he was run over and dragged some feet by the dump truck.One witness said the man’s head was run over by the rear wheel of the dump truck, the paper reported.
