Man Charged with Stealing More Than $50K of Steel
Irmo Police charged the man with stealing metal from a factory on Western Lane in Irmo.

The Irmo Police Department has charged a Pomaria man with stealing more than $50,000 worth of steel from an Irmo business, according to Irmo Police Chief Brian Buck.
David E. Cherry, 49, was charged with two counts of grand larceny.
Cherry is suspected of stealing $47,000 worth of steel from Select Comfort, a factory on Western Lane in Irmo, in April of 2011. He also is suspected of stealing $4,700 worth of steel from Select Comfort on Nov. 9.

Detectives say a Select Comfort employee wrote down the license plate number of the truck Cherry is suspected of driving Nov. 9.
Buck said Irmo Police Sgt. Robert Dale spotted the truck on Thursday, Nov. 10.

Cherry was arrested and is being held at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center. He is also charged with driving under suspension and being a habitual traffic offender.
Detectives say Cherry sold the steel to two different scrap metal dealers, one in Sumter in April and one in Laurens. It was not known how much Cherry received from selling the metal.
