Here are the top stories in Columbia today:
- More Columbia families have been evicted from their homes and are now scrambling for assistance. Affected families have been left with no protections after the federal eviction moratorium ended on Aug. 27. The group One Common Cause is calling on Governor McMaster to put a state-wide moratorium in place to protect South Carolina residents and their children. (WACH.com)
- Columbia Fire Marshals are reviewing mask mandate enforcement after Columbia-Richland County Fire Chief Aubrey D. Jenkins, said he was "not pleased" with the lack of masking at a recent Williams-Brice Stadium game. It has been nearly three weeks since the City of Columbia passed its ordinance requiring that masks be worn in all public places in the city. Jenkins says the fire department is currently planning for ways to improve enforcement efforts going forward. (WIS10)
- The City of Columbia is seeking civic-minded individuals to fill vacancies on various city boards and commissions for a full two- to five-year term. The application deadline is 5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2021. (News 19)
- A Columbia mother is mourning the loss of her son Cornelius Donte Brown, a 22-year-old sailor who was murdered while stationed in California, and is demanding answers from the La Mesa police department in her son's murder investigation. (WIS10)
- Members of the Columbia Firefighters Association have publicly endorsed Sam Johnson for mayor of Columbia, as they believe he is the right person to "fix staffing shortages they face." (Abccolumbia.com)
