Orchid Show Planned for Valentine's Weekend

Riverbanks Zoo will hold its 7th annual "Orchids on the Riverbanks Festival" Feb. 10-12.

Zoogoers can view a vibrant display of orchids from around the world this weekend at Riverbanks Zoo

The zoo is partnering with the S.C. Orchid Society and Ikebana International Chapter 182 for the 7th annual Orchids on the Riverbanks Festival on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Perfectly timed for the Valentine's weekend, orchid vendors from across the Carolinas will be on hand selling live plants for your favorite Valentine.

The event also features free programs and expert planting tips for everyone from seasoned growers to the greenest of thumbs. 

The general festival hours are 1 to 5 p.m. Friday, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Admission to Orchids on the Riverbanks is free with paid admission to Riverbanks Zoo and Garden.

Here is the list of scheduled programs: 

  • 11 a.m. Saturday: Linda Thorne from Seagrove Orchids will present “Growing Phalaenopsis.” The program will highlight the most popular group of orchids for growing in the home. 
  • 12 p.m. Saturday: Carter & Holmes will present “Growing Orchids for Beginners.” This program is a must-see for those just getting started. 
  • 1 p.m. Saturday: Tom Nasser of Carolina Orchids will lead a tour of the exhibit hall located inside the Magnolia Room of the Botanical Garden Visitors Center. The interactive tour is designed to expose participants to the wide variety of orchids that exist, as well as to allow time for questions regarding this spectacular species of flower.
