P.O.V. Film Series Screens "Repo Man" At Tapp's May 14

'Repo Man has the type of unerring energy that leaves audiences breathless and entertained.'

Second Thursday returns as Point of View presents the 80’s cult classic “Repo Man” (1984). An early directorial turn by Alex Cox (Sid and Nancy, The Walker), Repo Man is a frenzied and fury-driven punksploitation film set in a seemingly post-apocalyptic, but actually very normal, Los Angeles.

The film focuses on Otto (Emilio Estevez) a grocery store shelf stocker who decides to take up the life of a repo man when he meets professional repossessor Bud (Harry Dean Stanton). Otto quickly discovers that the world of repossessing cars means engaging in illicit behavior and encountering things that are...not of this world. Repo Man represents a shifting tide in science fiction, with director Alex Cox creating a gritty, but loving exploration of youth culture at odds with authority. Known for its various sight gags, quotable dialogue and hand drawn special effects it exists in a cinematic realm all its own. The film famously includes a soundtrack of prominent Los Angeles punk bands such as Suicidal Tendencies, The Circle Jerks and Black Flag. Though not the first film in the flash bang movement that was punksploitation, it is easily the most well regarded and stands in as a key example of low-fi directorial work achieving high scale products. After watching this movie you will never treat Chevy Malibus the same way again.

This film screening is part of a continuing collaboration between Point of View and Tapp’s Arts Center. P.O.V. Film Series meets the second Thursday each month at Tapp’s Arts Center to view and discuss films of varying styles and genres from around the world.

Seating is provided but your chairs, pillows and cushions are welcome.
