Richland 1 PASS Scores Lag Behind Rest of State
A few scattered bright spots but elementary and middle school students trailed state peers.
The State Department of Education released the Palmetto Assessment of State Standards (PASS) for the 2011-12 school year this week.Â
Across the state, Science and Social Studies showed the largest improvement, while Writing and Reading and Research had increases in the middle grades. In Math, the scores were a mixed bag, with slight increases and decreases. The largest decrease came in 5th grade Writing.
The figures below represent the percentage of students who met standards or were exemplary.

In Richland 1, students in grades 3-8 were below state numbers, off by between 5 and 10 percentage points in most cases.

trailed the performance of the state by between 10 and 12 percentage points. The bright spot was 3rd grade Science, where those students surpassed both county and state marks, by 18.5 percentage points in the case of the county.Â
