Second Baby Giraffe Born at Riverbanks Zoo

The calf is the second to be born this July at the zoo.

The Riverbanks giraffe herd has yet another addition to the family. 

A 134-pound calf was born on July 27 bringing the herd to a total of eight. . 

Zookeepers named the most recent calf Calvin. He is the second-born to giraffe parents Charlie and Krissy.

Six giraffes have been born at Riverbanks since February 2009. 

“In recent years, the Zoo’s mammal department has put a lot of effort into increasing the number of giraffes that reside at Riverbanks,” said John Davis, curator of mammals.  “Now that we have a full house, we will refocus our attention on maintaining that large number here at the Zoo.”

Visitors can see Calvin and Lennard daily in the African Savanna exhibit.
