Sens. Graham and DeMint To Help Akin With $2,500 Per Head Luncheon
Both South Carolina Senators back the controversial Missouri Rep.

While many in the Republican Party fled Missouri Rep. Todd Akin after his controversial statements about rape and abortion, South Carolina Senators Jim DeMint and Lindsey Graham are not among them.
Akin is challenging longtime incumbent Democrat Claire McCaskill for Senator and was leading in polls until his comments caused a firestorm of controversy and a plunge in the polls.
Last week, DeMint confirmed that the Senate Conservatives Fund, a PAC with whom he is closely aligned, would be raising money for Akin. The move came even though GOP Presidential nominee Mitt Romney suggested that Akin step down and the chair of the National Republican Senatorial Committee Sen. John Cornyn of Texas said the committee would not be providing any backing, saying the race was "not winnable."

On Wednesday, Graham who has traditionally been considered more moderate than DeMint, will join his Palmetto State colleague at a luncheon to raise money for Akin. The luncheon which will take place in Washington, D.C. and will also be attended by Oklahoma Senators, James Inhofe and Tom Coburn. The event costs $2,500 per person to attend.
The website Politico noted that being linked to the event carries little political risk for any of the senators, as they are all from reliably Republican states.
