City of Florence opens third round of opioid recovery grants (thetandd.com) — The City of Florence is now accepting applications for its third round of South Carolina Opioid Recovery Fund grants, aimed at tackling the opioid crisis locally. Eligible organizations must email completed applications by 5 p.m. on Friday, August 14, 2026, after which the city’s Opioid Response Commission will review proposals and send funding recommendations to City Council.

MUSC Health Florence Medical Center breaks ground for new Hollings Cancer Center facility (thestate.com) — MUSC Health has broken ground on a new Hollings Cancer Center at Florence Medical Center, bringing more advanced cancer care directly to Pee Dee residents. The facility will centralize screening, treatment, and survivorship services while expanding access to cutting-edge clinical trials, so more Florence-area patients can receive top-tier care without leaving the region.
   

4. Florence county sheriff warns drivers ahead of schools opening (wbtw.com) — Drivers in Florence County are being warned to slow down and watch for school buses as Florence School District 1 students return to class Wednesday. The sheriff’s office will boost patrols in school zones, enforce zero tolerance for speeding, and reminds motorists of stiff fines and possible jail time for illegally passing stopped school buses.
   

5. Florence leaders conduct ‘Care Walk' after recent shootings (wbtw.com) — Florence city and community leaders recently walked a local neighborhood to rebuild trust after several shootings, including an April incident at Mordecai C. Johnson Park. Police, mental health professionals, faith leaders, and elected officials went door to door, stressing long-term support, holistic healing, and making sure residents know they are seen, heard, and have somewhere to turn.
