Chuck Reedy's Plea For Goose Creek Gators to Finish Playoffs

Coach told SCHSL: "Please don't penalize the kids."

The doors may have been closed, but it was clear Goose Creek coach Chuck Reedy cares about every player on his team.

The Gators were disqualified from the state playoff tournament on Tuesday after it was revealed that one of this season's players was ineligible.

Nearly a dozen members of the media stood outside of the door of the committee room, but Reedy could be heard clearly as he defended his team.

Reedy told the executive committee that the student involved came from a troubled background and needed something bigger.

"I care about winning football games, but saving a kids life is more important," Reedy told the committee.

The student allegedly played only 20 plays in the season.

The coach touted his own clean record, telling the committee that he has never been before a disciplinary committee before.

The school district had referred to the issue as a clerical mistake involving the student's transcript. Reedy could also be heard explaining the school's process in verifying eligibility.

Reedy said he'd rather be fired than see the team punished. As he finished his comments, Reedy became emotional.

"Please don't penalize these kids," he asked the committee. "They've done nothing wrong."
