Mayors Support Yes 4 Schools

Bond referendum gets backing of municipal leaders.

Supporters of the $198 million bond referendum for Berkeley County School construction announced more high-profile support Tuesday. Mayors in Goose Creek, Hanahan and Charleston endorsed the referendum.

If approved by voters on Nov. 6, the school district plans to build a new high school and middle school to service Daniel Island and Cainhoy, a new elementary school for Hanahan students and new elementary schools for Goose Creek suburbs.

Opponents have challenged the added tax burden on county homeowners, but elected leaders have came out in support of the referendum because of what they see as necessary improvements.

In a statement, Goose Creek Mayor Michael Heitzler, a former educator, noted his passion for a better learning environment for students.

"Inadequate school facilities, especially overcrowding halls and classrooms, dim the academic opportunities for our children and youth," he said. "Sadly, 13 of our district schools are near or beyond capacity. Our children deserve better."
