Did you ever think you could change?

Do you ever find it hard do things that you know you shouldn't do, or have you ever found it difficult to do things that you know you should?   Of course you have; you are human aren't you?
Why is it so hard to change then?  We all need to.  Sure you can change around the fringes of your life (your hair color, your clothes, your surroundings, some habits), but how is it possible to change the very essence of who you are?
Can a pessimist become an optimist?   Can a cynic become hopeful?  Can an angry person become kind?
You might answer these questions differently depending on where you are in life.  If you are in a good place in life, you might answer these questions positively.   But if you have tried to change for many years like me, you might say that "real" change is honestly not possible.
So is it really, truly, honestly possible to change the most intimate parts of you that you want so badly to change?   I would say no.   The best thing we can hope for is to change the behavior around the thing we need changing.  Changing these types of things requires a greater power than we can muster.
What do you think?
