Mt. Pleasant Girl Scouts Receive Highest Honor

The Girl Scouts of Eastern South Carolina congratulated and honored Allison M. Huggins, JaLisa N. Decker and Megan Ashley Herlihy for earning the Girl Scout Gold Award.

Allison M. Huggins earned her Gold Award by educating others about human trafficking. Her project focused on starting a group at the North Charleston Dream Center that focused on “at risk” teens in the North Charleston area to help build the girls’ self-esteem. During the 16-week program, Allison worked with the girls on their life goals and how to attain those goals, she also arranged guest speakers in different career fields to speak with the girls and took the girls on a camping trip. Allison created a curriculum for this project and shared it with the North Charleston Dream Center so that the center’s interns can continue this program every summer.

JaLisa N. Decker earned her Gold Award for her Palmetto Scholars Academy Afterschool Tutoring Program.

Her project focused on providing an academic resource, outside of the school day, to seek assistance with schoolwork. She created a peer-tutoring program in which students can get help with their homework after school. This program was such a success that current students will continue to implement it each year.

Megan Ashley Herlihy earned her Gold Award for her project, Protect Your Pooch. Her project focused on dangerous transportation of dogs in the back of pickup trucks.

Her goal was for Mount Pleasant to adopt and pass a law similar to the law in North Charleston (chapter 4 section 4-6 d). A law was not passed but Mayor Linda Page of Mount Pleasant allowed Megan to create a PSA video about her issue and posted it on the town’s website.

Further, Mayor Page awarded the Mt. Pleasant Gold Award recipients with a personal letter congratulating them, a lapel pin for each of their parents and each of the Girl Scouts a key to the town of Mt. Pleasant.
