Here are the top five stories today in Myrtle Beach:

  1. The juvenile who was wanted after the shooting that killed Florence teenager, Quay Dickens is now in custody. Myrtle Beach Police have reported that the second juvenile charged in connection with the case has been located, and taken into custody. The person's name and the exact charges were not released. Two adults were arrested earlier this week. One adult was charged with murder and other charges, and was denied bond. The other adult was charged as an accessory after the fact, and was released on $35,000 bond. (WMBF)
  2. A Murrells Inlet man will be charged with murder, following the shooting that killed a 76-year-old man from Ohio in the Wachesaw Road area of town. James Thomas, 76, of Defiance, Ohio was killed, and a 47-year-old woman was shot, and taken to a hospital. The perpetrator, James Charles Lewis, 46, was also shot, but it is unclear how that happened. Lewis will be charged with murder, attempted murder, first-degree burglary and domestic violence of a high and aggravated nature. Lewis was known by police due to previous encounters with him. He was hospitalized with his injuries, and will be brought to Georgetown County Detention Center and charged as soon as he is released from the hospital. (WBTW)
  3. New documents just released show that police responded to the Carolina Forest home of Anthony Lee Rayfield several hours before he barricaded himself inside last month. The police were called to the home several times that day, the first time being around 3:30 a.m. HCPD was called again around noon, and the scene remained active for many hours. A fire broke out just before midnight. Neighboring homes were evacuated as there were indications they could be damaged by Rayfield, who was behaving erratically. In the end, the fire engulfed the home, and Rayfield died inside the home. (WMBF)
  4. Did you know that Horry County has the fastest-growing veteran population in the United States? That's according to Veterans Affairs Director, Ronald Elvis Jr. There is hope that a new state-run veteran nursing home may soon come to Horry County, which comes at a perfect time as many Vietnam-era vets are reaching the age where they may need assisted care and other services. The veteran population across SC is expected to increase 7% each year, but locally it grew by 11% in the last fiscal year. The nursing home project is still in the negotiation and talking phase. (WBTW)
  5. The Interstate 73 initiative has hit another roadblock. On Thursday, the South Carolina Senate passed a $12.6 billion budget that did not include funding for I-73. Local senators Greg Hembree, Luke Rankin, and Stephen Goldfinch pushed to get $1 billion for road improvements to help complete I-73, but to no avail. (WMBF)

From my notebook:

  • Carolina Forest construction news: Postal Way construction is expected to be finished by year's end. (Myhorrynews) Residents have expressed their concerns about 23 possible new homes being built on Carolina Forest wetlands. Neighbors in the Perry Place subdivision say they purchased their property specifically because the wetlands would not be developed, flooding will increase, and there are safety issues. They have been encouraged to speak at the next Horry County Council meeting. (wpde.com)
  • When Cindy Young was away from her Horry County students during the pandemic, she decided to write, and the stories just kept on coming. Now, the Carolina Forest Elementary School counselor has published the first of her books designed to help girls with self esteem. The book is called, "Pretty Comes In All Shapes and Sizes," and it's just part of Young's unique way of helping kids. She's also working with the school's vice principal on a talk show to help kids, parents and teachers talk about mental health. (wpde.com)

The popular boat launch to House Creek will get an enlarged parking lot and new kayak ramp for commercial kayaking use. Renovations should be done by the end of May. About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
