Here are the top stories in Myrtle Beach today:

  1. The Conway City Council voted 6-1 in favor of the use of electric rental scooters from company Peel Scooters across the downtown area. The vote was made to approve the company for a pilot program that will last six months. At the end of the pilot, the city council will meet again to determine whether the scooters are a good fit for Conway or not. The company hopes to provide a fleet of around 50 electric scooters to the area. Interested parties will be able to rent the scooters using their phones via an app. Vending locations for the scooters will be found at Riverwalk Park, Town Green Square, Collins Park, Kingston Street, 5th Avenue and Main Street and Main Street and 3rd Avenue. However, it remains unclear exactly when the new scooters will become available for use. (WMBF)
  2. The Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce just filled a newly created 'Workforce Talent Manager' position in hopes that the position will lead to more jobs along Myrtle Beach. The new talent manager will work to bring in out-of-state industries by meeting with local talent and identifying the kinds of jobs to advertise to other industries. Newly hired Workforce Talent Manager BJ Beaver said, "Growing up in Myrtle Beach there's always been a notion that once you get your education the first thing you should do is leave this area because of lack of opportunity. Now it's our role to make sure that once you have this great education, you can find your career in this area." Beaver has lived in the area for 30 years and spent the last decade working as Miller-Mottes' colleges career services manager. (wpde.com)
  3. St. Patrick's Day is less than a month away, and what better place to celebrate than the well-established Flynn's Irish Tavern? Owner John Corbett shared the history of the Irish bar, saying, "In 1965, the city built this as the municipal building. And it was the fire department, which consists of two fire trucks, and the city jail. And from my understanding, back in those days all the young kids would come down to the beach for a weekend and a lot of those ended up in those jails. I still got customers that come in and say, 'I've been here before, but it wasn't to eat.'" Corbett bought the bar from Irishman and long-time owner Marty Flynn, 81, in 2019. As you might expect, the bar maintains an authentic Irish pub vibe by offering Irish dishes made from scratch, a distinguishably Irish atmosphere, and over 70 brands of Irish whiskey. (WBTW)
  4. Surfside Beach is looking for community feedback regarding its soon to be made 10-year long road map for the area's future. Mayor Bob Hellyer acknowledges that none of the residents of Surfside Beach really want the community to change, but he admits that change is necessary as time goes on. That being said, Hellyer believes Surfside Beach can change to keep up with the times while still maintaining its integrity as a quaint family spot. Civilians interested in sharing their thoughts can look for community events at the Dick M. Johnson Civic Center to speak with town leaders regarding the road map. A draft is expected to be finished by the end of this year. (WBTW)
  5. The new, eclectic Murrells Inlet restaurant Hippie Hen House plans to serve locally produced food to the area from "barn and beach to the table" as soon as this spring. The restaurant has a 70s feel to it and is decorated with pictures of roosters throughout its interior. It's also the home of a Volkswagen Beetle with a restaurant-inspired paint job. The menu is chock full of all kinds of sandwiches, salads, and beach-flavored dishes featuring crab, shrimp, and more. They also plan on serving breakfast and will offer Happy Hour food specials Monday through Friday from 2-6 p.m. (Myrtle Beach Sun News)
