Here are the top five stories in Myrtle Beach today:
- Surfside Beach has announced that admission to its rebuilt pier will be free for the first year. Surfside's town council voted unanimously to let visitors use the pier for free for one year once it opens. The repairs are expected to be finished in April. Previously, the town had charged a $1 admission fee for non-residents to use the pier that was destroyed in 2016 by Hurricane Matthew. (wpde.com) (WBTW) (WMBF) Surfside Beach Presbyterian Church repairs are also underway after its bell tower was struck by lightning on the Fourth of July. (WBTW)
- A puppy that was found chained to a tree without food or water in the woods in Myrtle Beach was saved by a person who had heard an animal "screaming" in the woods for several days. All About Animals Rescue and Transport helped rescue the young canine that they named "Gray." The six month old dog is being cared for at Advanced Vet Care in Conway. All About Animals would welcome donations towards Gray's continued veterinary care. (wpde.com)
- A 37-year-old Myrtle Beach woman was arrested and charged with unlawful conduct toward a child after her newborn baby tested positive for drugs. The arrest warrant indicates that police were called to Grand Strand Medical Center in October when the child was left abandoned at the hospital. The baby tested positive for opiates and amphetamines. The child was given to the Department of Social Services. The mother had also tested positive for the same drugs after giving birth. She was granted a $10,000 bond but remains in custody at Long Detention Center. (WMBF)
- Residents in Horry and Georgetown counties who lost work due to Hurricane Ian are able to apply for disaster-related unemployment assistance. FEMA has identified people living or working in the two counties as eligible to receive unemployment assistance funds via Disaster Unemployment Assistance. A worker's unemployment must be the direct result of Hurricane Ian. Assistance is available for the period of October 2, 2022 through May 27, 2023. Certain criteria applies so be sure to check with SCDEW for all the information. (WBTW)
- The sold-out Carolina Country Music Festival has just announced two more acts for its 2023 list of performers. Tracy Lawrence and Hardy were added to the main stage lineup. (wpde.com) (WMBF)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
