Here are the top five stories in Myrtle Beach today:
- Get ready! This coming weekend is more than jam-packed with events up and down the entire Grand Strand. Pick your favorites, and pack your patience! Click on the individual links for specific information about each event. Burger Week continues in Conway through Sunday. The two-day Giant Yard Sale is happening at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Surfside today and Saturday. Atalaya Castle Arts & Crafts Festival at Huntington Beach State Park Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Celebrate Surfside Beach Festival Saturday on 3rd Avenue South next to Benjamin's Bakery. The Irish-Italian Festival in North Myrtle Beach Saturday on Main Street. Beach'n Chili Fest is back Friday, Saturday and Sunday at B&C Pavilion. The Hurricane Alley Motorcycle Rally (a.k.a. Fall Bike Week) starts Monday, but there are always early birds arriving on Saturday and Sunday! Grand Strand Humane Society is having a free adoption event Saturday and Sunday at its Mr. Joe White Avenue location with the goal of adopting out 55 animals this weekend. (wpde.com)
- Myrtle Beach International Airport is putting out the word about parking issues for the third weekend in a row. While this weekend looks to be particularly busy with all the fall events happening around town, locals heading elsewhere by air this weekend could be in for some parking woes at the airport. The airport administration is advising travelers to arrive extra early if they need to park, because it will take extra time to find a space. (WMBF)
- Carolina Forest residents gathered at a neighborhood rec center to voice their opinions on the proposed development of the remainder of River Oaks Golf Course. More than 200 folks expressed their disapproval of the 500-home proposal that would in effect replace the well-loved golf course. Concerns over the loss of natural, green space as well as increased traffic led the discussion. The project designer says his company will "do their best" to review the concerns and make changes ahead of the Horry County Planning Commission's next meeting, October 6. (wpde.com) (WMBF) (WBTW)
- There was a heavy police presence in Socastee on Thursday afternoon after a shooting near Bay Road Car Wash and the Sonic Drive-In on Highway 707 near Holmestown Road and Bay Road. The shooting resulted in one person being seriously injured and transported to the hospital. Police are looking for a vehicle and a suspect believed to be involved. Anyone with info should call HCPD at (843) 915-8477. (WBTW) (WMBF)
- Myrtle Beach's Beach Advisory Committee is reviewing lifeguard responsibilities, umbrella rules and safety measures for the city's beaches. The city wants to hire more "LGO" personnel for next year — meaning the employee would only be a lifeguard responsible for patrolling the beach and water. They would not be responsible for beach equipment rentals. That duty would be performed by beach attendants instead. Umbrellas provided to the city by Lack's Beach Services will need to be buried 18-24 inches into the ground to prevent flyaways. (WMBF)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
