Here are the top four stories in Myrtle Beach today:
- There's a new surf shop in downtown Myrtle Beach. Good Vibes Surf & Skate shop has opened on Broadway Street. Making the move from Surfside Beach, the shop has a dual purpose also serving as the headquarters for owner Philip Jackson's, nonprofit Surf Dreams Foundation, which provides free surfing classes, camps, scholarships and opportunities for community members in need. Jackson has also partnered with the Heart of Stoke Foundation, a new non-profit that gives kids gear and places to skateboard. Stop in and check out the new shop when you have a chance! (WMBF)
- In an effort to get ahead of the epidemic of teen dating violence, Sara Barber, executive director of the South Carolina Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault, is working with area schools to implement education in health classes. One Love Club, started by physical education teacher Bobby Curran at Socastee High School is doing just that, innovatively offering a comprehensive program for students that looks at how to build and maintain healthy relationships. It works by having students attend workshops, they watch films based on relationships and have in-depth discussions about what was healthy or unhealthy. A record fifty-three students attended the first club meeting. According to WBTW, "students who want to join the club or educators who want to learn how to become One Love instructors can reach out to One Love Socastee on Instagram at @1lovesocastee." (WBTW)
- Brittany Rutledge-Jackson, 25, and Lashon Ladson, 37, both from Longs, have been charged with trafficking persons. Reports state that the two took advantage of a homeless woman and used her in a commercial sex scheme and then took all the money. According to WMBF, "the two suspects, along with Kwame Vereen, were arrested back in October and charged with incidents that occurred in September at the Comfort Suites Hotel on Frontage Road East, off Highway 501 in Myrtle Beach. All three were charged with trafficking in persons under the age of 18. The case is being prosecuted by the South Carolina Attorney General's Office. If you are a victim of human trafficking or see something suspicious, you're asked to call the National Human Trafficking Hotline at 1-888-373-7888 or text 233733." (WMBFnews.com)
