Here are the top five stories in Myrtle Beach today:

  1. The U.S. Small Business Administration has opened a Business Recovery Center in the Pawleys Island area to provide Georgetown County business owners impacted by Hurricane Ian with disaster assistance. Read more about it in the SBA press release here: (U.S. Small Business Administration) (wpde.com) In a related story, Myrtle Beach Area Chamber Of Commerce reports that FEMA aid is now available to Horry and Georgetown Counties following Hurricane Ian. (Press Release Desk)
  2. A 32-year-old Augusta, Georgia man has died from injuries sustained after being hit by vehicle in Garden City. Joshua Harden was hit by a vehicle near the 3000 block of Highway 17 Business on Wednesday. (wpde.com) (Myhorrynews)
  3. The Waccamaw tribe of Native Americans is one of the first tribes to be recognized in South Carolina. Even though so many Myrtle Beach area attractions and sites are named after the Waccamaw, tribal leaders say they are often forgotten. Harold "Buster" Hatcher is the chief of the Waccamaw Indian People and he says he worries about health, education and fair and equal treatment of his people. Hatcher would like to see state and federal government treating the Waccamaw equal to other citizens and often he feels the Waccamaw are not treated the same as other citizens. Hatcher is working hard to make changes with local government as a place to start. (WBTW)
  4. A group of City of Myrtle Beach employees teamed up to paint a new mural in the Arts and Innovation District on Tuesday. The rear of the building at 517 Ninth Avenue North got an artful paint job by city staffers. The mural features the Myrtle Beach Arts & Innovation District logo. (wpde.com)
  5. Fifty-eight horses, 50 men, five pints of rum and nine officers -- that's who boarded the Greer/Cox Ferry 200 years ago for a historic trip from Conway to the coast. Horry County Historical Society actually has a receipt from the historic crossing! Earlier this week, a historical marker was placed at the end of Cox Ferry Road commemorating the day Colonel Peter Horry took a trip across most of the area that would eventually bear his name. About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
