A Great Place to Take a Date!

Need a great idea for a place to take your wife or significant other on a date? Discover the South of Broadway theatre!

Need a great idea for a place to take your wife or significant other on a date?

I’m not bragging, but. I took my wife to the opening night of Neil Simmons, “I Ought To Be In Pictures” at the South of Broadway theatre on East Montague Street in North Charleston last night and we had a blast!

First of all, they have really turned the ole Park Circle area into a nice place to go for a date!  Since I just moved here, I don’t know what it was like before, but let me tell you it is a lot of fun!  We walked up and down Montague, stopped into what I would say is the most authentic Irish Pup I’ve ever seen, the “Madra Rua.”  Their Fish and Chips are deliciously authentic!

When we arrived at the South of Broadway theatre, we met the Founder, Mary Gould. What a wonderful lady!  Then we went inside and took our seats, my wife Brig leaned over and smiled at me, she was very happy.  You see, it was the first play she had ever been to!  We both agreed that the atmosphere was very intimate and the Wine Bar was an unexpected bonus!  We sat in the front row, center stage as the play started and it was fantastic!

“I Ought TO Be In Pictures” by Neil Simon tells a Hollywood story from behind the lights, from behind the cameras and behind the dreams.  It is about a man and his daughter and how they discover a bond beyond any that Hollywood can create.  When the 18 year old shows up on her screenwriter father’s doorstep demanding that he get her into the movies, the fun begins!

The cast list:

Herb Tucker, the father played by Mark Poremba,

Libby Tucker the daughter played by Maggie Borden,

Steffy Blondell, Herb’s girlfriend, played by Laura Rose

Mary Gould, the theatre’s founder welcomed the audience and introduced the play.  Then Maggie Borden, who played the part of Libby Tucker burst on stage with an energy that instantly captivated us all.  Maggie played her part to the “T” as she interacted with Mark Poremba who played the role of Herb Tucker, her screen writing father and Laura Rose who played the loveable part of Steffy Blondell, Herb’s very patient girlfriend. It struck me that perhaps Laura brought to her role, a real life understanding of who Steffy is and she is wonderful!  My hat goes off to you all!

It wouldn’t be fair to not say a little something about Mark Poremba’s extraordinary performance as Herb Tucker.  He was Herb Tucker, mind, body and soul!  There was never a moment that he didn’t portray the part perfectly.  I was astounded by Mark’s energy, his persona.  I guess it’s fair to say that of all the characters, I could relate with Herb’s place in life the most.

I could relate to Herb, I loved Libby and just wanted to hug Steffy, what else can I say other than, “Thank you all for your wonderful performances!”  The play ended to a standing ovation from an audience that had been highly entertained.  This may sound like a cliché but we all laughed, we cried, we fell in love!

I highly recommend that you catch the next showing of “I Ought To Be In Pictures” at the South of Broadway theatre in the old Park Circle area of East Montague.  You will be glad you did!
