Dorchester County Democratic Party (DCDP) Gets Ready for 2012 Elections!

The Dorchester County Democratic Party held its 2012 Party Convention in Ridgeville this past Monday, March 19^th.  At the Convention the Dorchester County Democratic Party elected its leaders for the next two years:

• Chair:   Richard Hayes
• 1^st Vice Chair: Ethel Campbell
• 2^nd Vice Chair: Dot Brown
• 3^rd Vice Chair: Jeni Atchley

Hayes begins his second consecutive term as DCDP chairman.  “You are our leaders,” Hayes reminded county party delegates in his acceptance speech.  We have 220 days left before Election Day. We need to energize our precincts, get out the vote and turn our Dorchester County blue!”

Other officers selected at the convention were Nancy Seufert and Dr. David Rison as DCDP’s representatives to the state Democratic Party’s executive committee, and Marty Turney and Rob Groce as SCDP executive committee alternates.

Dr. Rison, retired Professor at CSU, was also selected to represent DCDP on the state party’s Rules and Credentials Committee, and former party chair Steve Yeomans (2008-2010) became the county party’s representative to South Carolina Democratic Party’s Platform and Resolutions Committee.  Yeomans also served as chairman of this 2012 convention.

State Rep. Gilda Cobb-Hunter gave a rousing speech as the keynote speaker, telling of the need for Democrats energize County Democrats to vote for the re-election of President Barack Obama in November, and to continue voter registration drives. She said that even though the attempted “Voter ID” law has been blocked by the U.S. Dept. of Justice, Republicans in the state capital are still trying to restrict the voting rights of women, minorities and seniors – all traditionally voting blocs for Democrats.   “Everyone you talk to everywhere you go, make sure they’re registered to vote,” Cobb-Hunter encouraged. Representative Hunter reminded all the Democrats that we are on the right side of all the issues – the issues that support the people of Dorchester County:  strong public education, revitalizing our infrastructure, and strong support of job creation.

There was a strong showing of elected officials in attendance, all who will run in November for re-election, including County Councilman Willie Davis, State Senator John Matthews, Solicitor David Pascoe, and State Representatives’ David Mack and Seth Whipper.
