Isn’t Every Day Thanks Giving day?

What are you thankful for today?

That is a pretty profound question isn’t it?  For some reason I woke this morning with it on my mind.  I wondered, had I not been thankful enough for the blessings that have been bestowed upon me throughout my life, especially the most recent blessings?  I do not take for granted those blessings, but am I thankful enough for them?  Yes, I believe so.

I’m, thankful for my daughter, Georgia, who scared the hell out of everybody this weekend by disappearing.  She is an adult, but she didn’t tell anybody where she was going or where she would be staying.  As it turned out she had gotten into an argument with my ex-wife over what now would be something considered very trivial but at the time seemed ever so important.  So she went to stay at her friends’ house in an attempt to enjoy what was left of her weekend.  She said to me “I’m not missing!” and I reminded her that “When your family doesn’t know where you are for twenty-four hours, then you’re missing to us!”  I think that caught her by surprise.  I’m thankful she is okay.

I’m thankful for the opportunity that my wife has given me to explore the creative side of myself as a writer.  She has sacrificed so much time and energy and despite working full- time, she will still read and critique everything I’ve written.  I said she read it, that doesn’t mean she liked it.  Still, what a fantastic thing to do for somebody else?  It isn’t like I only write a few pages every month.  No…I write hundreds of pages, when you stop and add them all up.  I write for my novels, I write on facebook, I write letters, I write blog posts!  I write a lot!  Her biggest complaint is that I am a terrible speller, but I am thankful for her willingness to encourage me to get better!

I’m thankful for the opportunity I’ve been given to write for the Patch.com.  There is an unsung hero here that many of you may not even know exists.  Her name is Lindsay Street and she is the editor for the Summerville Patch.com.  I can only imagine how much work it must be for her to keep this thing going.  I’m thankful that she contacted me about blogging as a local voice and for her patience with me because at times I will go off on a creative bent and send in too many articles to be posted all at once.  She has never refused to post what I have written and I am thankful for that!

Today, however, I think I will stop and take a little time to give thanks for the great men and women of our armed forces.  Considering everything that is going on, especially in Afghanistan today, I think I will say thank you to all of those who have served.  Thank you for your service to our great nation.  Thank you for being there when our nation called upon you and sent you into harms way.  You went without hesitation, without question, without doubt, and probably with the knowledge that this may be your very last mission, ever.

On April 23rd, I will be speaking at the meeting of our local area Blue Star Mothers.  What an incredible group of ladies.  Can you imagine the plethora of emotions that must be going through their hearts at times like this, at times when the whole world seems to have turned upside down?  Without Blue Star Mothers, there would be no United States of America!  Think about it.  These are true patriots; all, ladies who are sacrificing, steadfast, and strong, while the rest of us go about our business as if our nation is not at war.  We should take the time today to hug a Blue Star Mother and to say thank you.  Thank you and God bless you Ma’am!

What are you thankful for?
