Army Medal of Honor Recipient at Center of Councilman's 4-Year, $250K Fight to Memorialize His Sacrifice (military.com) — Summerville Councilman Bob Jackson is leading a $250,000 fundraising push to build a bronze statue memorializing hometown Medal of Honor recipient Sgt. 1st Class Christopher Celiz near Main Street and Highway 78. About $130,000 has been raised so far, and the Summerville Parks Foundation is accepting tax-deductible donations by mail or email to honor Celiz's sacrifice and his deep roots in the community.

Pets dead, resident rescued after Summerville house fire on Saturday (counton2.com) — A Summerville resident was rescued from a serious house fire in the Palmetto Park neighborhood Saturday afternoon, though their pets sadly died from smoke inhalation. Firefighters quickly contained the blaze and turned care of the victim over to Dorchester County EMS. Officials are investigating the cause and urging residents to check smoke alarms and review home escape plans.
   

3. Summerville weighs future land use map to steer growth away from neighborhoods (abcnews4.com) — Summerville officials are updating the town's future land use map to better separate commercial growth from established neighborhoods, especially around downtown and the historic district. Council members reviewed a draft, suggested corridor changes along key roads, and expect a first public reading in September, when residents can weigh in on how Summerville should grow over the next five years.
   

4. Woman allegedly drives into victim after argument at gas station: NCPD (counton2.com) — A woman from Summerville turned herself in to North Charleston police after officers say she struck another woman with her car following an argument at a Sunoco on Ashley Phosphate Road. Investigators report the victim was hospitalized and that the driver's license was suspended with prior related convictions. The Summerville woman now faces multiple serious charges, including aggravated assault.
   

5. Berkeley County has more than $239,000 available for park and recreation projects. Here's how to apply (live5news.com) — Berkeley County has more than $239,000 in Parks and Recreation Development (PARD) funds available, and Summerville's new nine-hole disc golf course at Brown Family Park shows what that money can do. The town used PARD matching funds after residents asked for a course, and county officials are now urging potential sponsors to meet with the grants office before mid-September to pitch new park projects.
