Smithfield move: How to preserve rural areas as metro grows (mitchellrepublic.com) — Residents just north of Sioux Falls are fighting the city's approval of a new Smithfield Foods pork plant near their rural homes, citing odor and safety worries as reasons they may move away. The project, part of the fast-growing Foundation Park industrial area, highlights how Sioux Falls' booming economy and job growth are reshaping once-quiet countryside around the metro.
   

2. Cherry Rock Farms pumpkins ready despite dry season (keloland.com) — Cherry Rock Farms in Sioux Falls is kicking off its free Pumpkin Festival this Saturday and Sunday, with pumpkin picking, hayrides, a corn maze, and food vendors from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Despite this summer's heat and drought, the fifth-generation family farm says the pumpkin crop looks strong, and the patch will stay open every weekend in October for local families to enjoy.
   

3. Rounds skeptical of USPS delivery fix in South Dakota (dakotanewsnow.com) — Mail delivery times in Sioux Falls and across South Dakota are under scrutiny as Sen. Mike Rounds criticizes how the Postal Service measures on-time performance. A new regional processing center planned in Sioux Falls is intended to keep in-state mail from being routed out of state, but it may take about nine months to become operational while existing centers continue working.
   

4. New space for bilingual therapists in downtown SF (keloland.com) — Spanish-speaking residents in Sioux Falls now have better access to mental health care thanks to a new downtown suite in the 300 Building shared by three therapists, two of them bilingual. Providers Trent Uthe and Diana Cruz offer individual, addiction, and group counseling while working to reduce stigma and meet growing demand from the city's Hispanic community.
   

5. Leaner South Dakota Festival of Books comes to Sioux Falls (thedakotascout.com) — Sioux Falls will host a slimmed-down South Dakota Festival of Books as a one-day event on Oct. 3 after a major funding cut. Even with fewer resources, organizers promise intentional programming, more than 25 authors, and two keynote speakers, giving local readers and writers a full day of talks and book-focused activities.
