SEWANEE, TN — An Antioch man died after being shot by police in Sewanee, Tenn.
Michael Cole, 40, of Antioch called 911 and said he was going to kill himself or be shot by officers, according to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. A group of law enforcement responded to Cole's location on Deepwoods Road near Fire Tower Road in the picturesque Monteagle Mountain town of Sewanee. The nearby St. Andrew's-Sewanee school was on lockdown during the incident.
A negotiation followed the officers' arrival, according to the TBI, but shortly thereafter Cole began shooting. Five of the six officers fired back. They have not been named but the TBI said those that shot included two Franklin County Sheriff's deputies, two officers from the Monteagle Police Department and an officer from the Sewanee Police Department. Cole was hit by at least one bullet and was taken to Emerald-Hodgson Hospital in Sewanee, where he died.
